In order to run a profitable home based online business, the three most important factors are the same keys you need to run a business offline: excellent product, good communication and customer service. Many online business owners make the mistake of thinking that just because they are online they do not need to exhibit good customer service because they can hide behind a screen. The truth of the matter is that because you are behind a screen, it is that much more important to provide excellent customer service. Since the customer cannot hear your tone of voice, or appreciate face-to-face contact, the business owner must put that much more effort into making sure that the customer realizes that he or she is getting the best service possible.

One way to let your customers know that you are going the extra mile for them is to provide them with "extras". For example, if you are running an ebay business, this could mean wrapping your items with a nice tissue paper, including a thank you note, and even slipping in a listing of other items you have to offer. Or maybe you are freelance writing online – provide your clients with your contact information so that they can get in contact with you anytime. These tactics work in making your online business more profitable because the products will then market themselves. When you are pleasant to do business with, people will remember you. On ebay, you will receive more positive feedback and get more stars. Editors will remember your work and write to you the next time they need a freelance writer. You get the picture.

Another way to provide excellent customer service is to be prompt. This may be harder than it sounds, because it involves having good time management skills, but it pays off in the end. Think about your own interactions with businesses as a customer. Don't you want to get the things you want as quickly as possible? See, the only thing that might stop a person from buying the same item for cheaper online is the fact that he or she can get that product immediately in a mall. However, if he or she knows that you ship things very quickly, then there is no deterring from buying from you. This works for other types of online businesses as well – ebooks sell well because the product provides immediate delivery!

So keep in mind that every transaction is an opportunity for more business to come your way – be kind to your customers, provide them with top quality service, and the returns will be higher than you ever expected.
