Whether gas prices are skyrocketing or they are going down, buying gas will still cost you money. Buying more gas than you absolutely need is just wasting money whether it is 5 dollars a gallon or 2 dollars a gallon. Sure, if you buy 10 gallons of gas every week, spending 2 dollars a gallon versus 5 will save you a lot of money, about $30 a week, but think about if you only bought 5 gallons a week. At a 5 dollar price, you would save $25 a week and at a 2 dollar price, you would save $10 a week in addition to the $30 savings from 5 to 2 dollars. Ultimately, if you want to save money, buy less gas.
First, you can drive less. Driving less actually can save you money in two ways. First, if we all drove half as much as we normally do, the price of gas would decrease. It's just basic supply and demand. With less demand, the price goes down just as will less supply the price goes up. If we have a smaller supply of oil, prices will go up, but if we start using less, the price will go down, or at least stay the same. This is positive, but driving less will have an even greater immediate impact on you now.
If you drive to work, try to carpool with anyone living nearby. If you drive your kids to school even though they could be taking the bus, stop. I never understood why some parents would drive their kids to school and pick them up day in and day out. You pay for the bus in your school taxes, why not take advantage of that? Instead of going food shopping a few times a week, cram it into once a week or once every other week. Don't drive all over to different supermarkets to save 50 cents on tissue, just pick a store that has consistently low prices and shop smart. Don't go to the mall every weekend. Make a trip out once a month or two when absolutely necessary.
Stay home and rent a movie instead of going out to the movies, and make your own fancy dinner at home. You will save gas and money on the movie and dinner. If you live close to your shopping center or to town, walk instead of drive. All of these things and simple planning can considerably cut down on your driving time.
Second, drive efficiently and effectively. Don't slam on your breaks, and don't gun it when you take off. Basically, just try to stay off the pedals as much as possible while still driving safe. Instead of riding the tale of the car in front of you, stay back, take your time, and coast. This will save gas and decrease on the wear and tear of your car. Also, always take good care of your car. Keep the tires inflated, check and change the oil and air filter frequently, and do all the correct maintenance at the right time according to your car manual.
Driving smart and minimally is the best way to save gas and save money. Taking unnecessary trips and driving poorly wastes time and gas, neither of which you can afford to waste.
