One of the most complex operations in facial plastic surgery is nasal reshaping or rhinoplasty. More commonly known as a nose job, rhinoplasty is a cosmetic surgery procedure that seeks to improve the function and appearance of a person's nose.
Certain changes that nasal reshaping does to a person's nose include reduction or increase in the overall size of the nose, removal of a hump, a change to the shape of the tip or bridge, a narrowing of the span of the nostrils, or a change of the angles between the nose and upper lip. Aside from aesthetic purposes, rhinoplasty can also be used to correct breathing problems.
Typically, rhinoplasty is performed in an outpatient setting such as a surgeon's office-based facility, an outpatient surgical center, or in a hospital. The procedure may use either general anesthesia, or local anesthesia mixed with sedation. Normally, the procedure takes between one and two hours to finish. For complicated procedures, a much longer time is required.
Rhinoplasty can be classified into two basic types. The first type is the open rhinoplasty. In this procedure, a small incision is done on the underside of the nose between the nostrils, along with other incisions that done on the inside of the nose. The additional incision created outside may result in a fine line scar, which will eventually fade over time.
The other type of rhinoplasty is the closed rhinoplasty. In this procedure, the incisions are located on the inside of the nose; thus, no visible scarring can take place. Though this may look like a much-preferred type, the decision on which type of procedure to employ lies on the specific case and condition of the patient.

After surgery, the patient's face may feel a little puffy, and the head and nose may ache. The facial plastic surgeon may prescribe pain relievers to address the problem. Bruising and swelling are normal and they will subside in a matter of two to three weeks. Though it happens very rarely, some bleeding may occur in the first few days of post-surgery. All dressings, stitches, and splints will be removed within one to two weeks. Patients can return to work within two weeks, as long as they avoid strenuous activities for at least three weeks to one month.
Complications that may arise with a nose job include allergic reactions to anesthesia, infection, nosebleed, and small burst blood vessels. Additional or revision surgery may be needed for some cases of complications.
Rhinoplasty is best for men or women who are physically healthy, and are unhappy with their noses. It is also necessary that these people also possess realistic expectations concerning the procedure in question.
