These days there are fewer and fewer companies who will lend you money, whether it’s for a credit card or something grander like a mortgage banks and other lenders are simply holding back.

The credit crunch and faltering global mortgage market has meant that many of us are unable to get the kind of money that many people have been able to attain in the past years of over-exuberant lending. This has happened mainly due to interest rates increasing drastically and not looking like coming back down for any time soon but also most lenders are refusing people out right.

It’s not necessarily their own fault that they are being rejected for loans and mortgages but simply that they are not deemed as being a dead cert for being able to afford to pay back any loaned money.

The odd thing is that for smaller lending options such as credit cards they are still being offered to people, sometimes through cold calling current customers who have not had a history of poor credit. It is hoped that by luring these people in, many of whom who have not had any desire for any form of lending or loans, that they will be precisely the kind of ideal customers that will pay off their balance on time and be able to cope with the interest, thus the bank earn money back off a responsible borrower.

A number of British banks have been approaching their customers about this recently and some customers with impeccable records have actually taken up this offer but not because they need the money. Many people, especially younger individuals are taking out credit cards but only using them for a smaller amount. Once they have made a few small purchases then they pay this amount off in full to avoid any interest.

Why have they done this? The reason is that by using credit cards they are going to have information put on their credit record and by paying it off regularly they are showing the credit unions that they can be trusted. It may not be needed right away but in the future if it remains difficult to get some other form of lending like a mortgage then you are going to have a good clean credit history and more likely to get approved.

This process has grown in popularity in recent years where people’s credit history is under much scrutiny for many people these days. By utilising this method people can use a credit card or even better a 0% credit cards to make some purchases (and not incur any charges if you choose a 0% card that doesn’t charge for purchases) to quickly build a positive credit history and better chances for the future.
