Medications using the new nasal technology are becoming more and more prevalent due to their rapid absorption in the nasal passages.

The main use of nasal sprays has been for delivery of a drug or drugs, generally to alleviate cold or allergy symptoms such as nasal congestion. Though the delivery methods vary, most nasal sprays function by instilling a fine mist into the nostril using a hand operated pump mechanism.

The three main types available are: antihistamines, corticosteroids, and topical decongestants. Here are a few of the most popular sprays using the nasal delivery technology:

• afrin nasal spray
• nasonex nasal spray
• ocean nasal spray
• fluticasone nasal spray
• atrovent nasal spray
• stadol nasal spray

• steroid nasal spray
• flunisolide nasal spray

Nasal sprays are most often prescribed by a doctor but as more non prescription drug start to use the nasal technology it has become available in supermarkets.

General Use of Nasal Delivery Sprays:

• Blow your nose gently.

• Wash your hands well with soap and water.

• Remove the packaging from the nasal spray pump.

• Some nasal sprays need to be primed before use. As well, some nasal sprays need to be shaken.Check with your pharmacist to see whether your nasal spray needs to be primed or shaken. If your spray needs to be primed before using, spray it a few times into the air and keep it well away from your eyes.

• Close one nostril and tilt your head forward.

• Insert the nasal spray tip into the other nostril. Keep the bottle pointing upright, and point the tip toward the back and outer side of the nose.

• Administer the required number of sprays into the nostril. Remember to breathe in deeply through your nose as you depress the applicator, and breathe out through your mouth after each spray.

• Remove the nasal spray tip from your nose and tilt your head back.

• If needed, repeat steps 5 to 8 in the other nostril, as directed by your doctor or pharmacist.

• Put the cap back onto the nasal spray container.

• Try not to blow your nose for several minutes after using the spray.

Nasal Delivery Technology is becoming more popular as pharmacists across the globe utilize the technology to deliver a continuous variety of medications.
