Staying for
holidays in Barcelona during the Christmas time is wonderful. As the climate is still favorable and sunny and
Barcelona apartments can be found easily, it is a good time to go there. Snow in Barcelona is rare but the feeling of Christmas is there anyways. A reason for that is that there are a lot of typical Catalan traditions for Christmas, the streets are decorated with many lights and you can also find traditional Christmas markets in Barcelona.
Christmas market in Barcelona
In Barcelona, the largest temporary market is called Feria de Santa Llucia. It begins in the first days of December and ends on Christmas. It is located in front of the Cathedral of Barcelona, in Placa de la Seu. There can be found everything regarding Christmas, like handmade gifts, typical food and decoration.
Caganer
The Caganer has a long tradition is Spain, especially in Catalonia. Translating the Spanish word into English, it means “pooper”. This name reflects what the statue is doing as it is defecating. Traditional, the statue looks like Mary or Jesus, but in modern days this changed to images of famous people, like football stars, politicians or celebrities. These statues can be bought in shops during Christmas time or on the Christmas markets.
Tio de Nadal
The Tio de Nadal is a piece of wood with a hole in the middle. In the front there is a painting of a face and it also has arms and legs. Little presents are put in the whole and it is covered by a rag. On Christmas Eve, children are beating the Tio de Nadal until it “poops” out the presents. This also has a long tradition in Catalonia.
