The term "planters warts" is actually a misnomer as they are really called plantars warts and named as such because they are found on the bottom surface or "plantar" of the foot. Just like any other type of wort, these are caused by a virus - the human papillomavirus, but unlike other types of warts they tend to be very painful because they are found in the areas that you put pressure on such is the ball of the foot and even the heel. Because of the pressure they often grow into the deeper layers of your skin.
As is the case with most warts, plantar warts may go away on their own, but the pain they can cause might drive you to seek treatment instead of waiting for them to gradually go away. It's actually really important to treat these types of warts because it is thought that they can be transmitted to other people if you walk barefoot on wet floors. Therefore treating your warts to make them go away quickly will help you from spreading the virus that causes warts to others.
How do you get planters warts?
Since these warts are caused by a virus, you actually get warts through some sort of exposure. While anyone can get them, it is typically children and people with decreased immune function that fall victim to plantars warts. The human papillomavirus, which causes warts, gets in through breaks in the skin. This is typically associated with public showers or walking barefoot on the ground. The virus can be lurking anywhere and if you step on it with your bare feet you may end up with warts!
So how do you know if you have planters warts?
Usually, they feel like a little small lump in the foot, sometimes a little bit under your skin and other times sticking out. They can cause leg and back pain and are rough and bumpy and usually have tiny dark spots inside which are actually blood vessels. They can be brown or grayish yellow and may also have a smooth surface. Typically you will find them located on the areas where you put the most pressure - your heels and ball of the foot.
While planters warts may not be as embarrassing as other warts that can be seen on your skin, they are probably the worst kind because they can cause quite a bit of pain can make it hard for you to walk. That's why many people who have plantar warts are running, or should I say limping, to find a good remedy!
