Research that is currently being carried out shows that if the new rules that the government are planning come in to force, then the average cost for a young person to complete their driving lessons, buy their first car and then insure it could reach as much as £10,000.
The new rules being planned are to make sure that at least 150 hours of driving lessons are carried out before they are able to take their test, and the test itself is soon to become a lot longer and more comprehensive.
This bold move comes from recent statistics showing that most 17-20 year-olds are ten times more likely to crash than a driver who is ten years older, and eight out of ten accidental deaths for boys aged 15-19 currently occur on the roads.
The proposal to change the way that the current ‘learning to drive’ system works is mainly to reduce the number of accidents that are caused by new, young qualified drivers.
Currently a one hour lesson with a qualified instructor costs on average £24 per hour. With the average amount of hours before a student takes their test currently at 45, the price of lessons will be around £1,080. If the amount of hours needed raises to 150 it could see the cost of lessons rise to a massive £3,600.
Before students are able to take their practical test they will have to complete a workbook of road achievements and be presented with a ‘test ready certificate’. The new practical test will be along the same lines as it currently is but will see the time limit extended. After the practical test students must also then face a ‘general driving examination’ where the examiner will not shout out instructions, instead the student will just be marked on their general driving skills.
