When you’re getting ready for your holidays you can normally prevent most mishaps such as making sure you keep everyone’s passport’s together, you can set off early to make sure you get to the airport on time and you can even check in over the internet the day before to decrease the amount of time spent waiting around in queues. There’s one thing that us holiday makers can’t stop though: Flight cancellations.

That’s exactly what happens every day for the odd flight in some countries, but yesterday there were an extreme amount of cancellations at London’s Stansted airport but there was no mention in the news that pilots had gone on strike and this time it wasn’t a case of the airline going bust either. In this case the reason was protestors camped out on the runway!

The activist group Plane Stupid broke into the airport in the early hours and some had chained themselves to fences, eventually the group were removed and detained by police but the damage was already done by the time the runway was cleared. A massive backlog of flights began building up and meant many people looking to jet away for some winter sun elsewhere were left queuing at the terminal.

This was unfortunate and could have happened at any time, but as a traveller what can you do in this situation? Are there any preventative measures that can save your holiday? Well there are actually a few measures that you can take to make sure you don’t miss out on your holidays.

Firstly there’s travel insurance, never leave home without it! Travel Insurance is a relatively inexpensive product when you factor in that sometimes when flights are cancelled you may not get back all of your money or you may be left with a bill from your hotel you’ve booked even if you have yet to arrive. travel insurance will normally cover most unexpected costs of holidays and it’s not just for medical care.

Very quickly cheap flights can become expensive nightmares if you become stranded in a foreign country like many Britons found themselves when flights company XL holidays collapsed this year. Considering how cheap travel insurance can help prevent this and many other problems a potential nightmare holiday can be salvaged or be rearranged minus the cost.

Considering how the cost of holidays including flights to Spain and other common destinations can cost around £200 per person it is a big expensive to risk not protecting your investment.
