iPod came out as a sound technology bombshell dropped by Apple Inc. in the year 2001. It was unique in all counts. Its small size, compatibility, storage facilities and superb sound quality just caught the imagination of the masses, thereby making the iPod an instant hit. Apple’s sales chart suddenly skyrocketed, making some others to come out with iPod beaters, but, no one has succeeded in evoking such awe in customers that the iPod did.
The last eight years saw great advances in sound technology and so has the iPod. The device has undergone constant upgradations too. Presently, the Apple produces four different models, namely, the iPod Nano, iPod Shuffle, iPod Touch and the Video iPod.
iPod Touch is a wi-fi mobile instrument featuring the multi-touch graphical user interface. Storage facilities vary between 8 GB to 32 GB flash memory. A very useful feature is that the device can connect to the iTunes store through wireless. It can even access Apple’s own App Store and download music of your choice. External Volume controls and built-in speakers increase the convenience and desirability quotient a great extent. The first generation iPod Touch was introduced in September 2007, but a new generation has started doing the rounds from September 2008.
All iPod Touch models are capable of playing music and videos and can even display photo slide shows. They can access iTunes, Safari and YouTube and contains facilities such as calendar, contacts, clock, calculator etc. The second generation can even send e-mails and browse the net for updates on stocks and whether too. An inexpensive software upgrade helps the first generation iPod Touch gain these features.
Initially, the iPod needs to be connected to a computer for configuring. iTunes can be installed on Windows operating system as well as Mac OS. A USB connection facility exists on the iPod for this purpose. The iPod Touch features a wi-fi connection and the Safari Browser. The latter is featured in the Apple iPhone too. Buying music from Apple’s own iTunes store, which stocks a stupendous range of music, has become a cakewalk now for the discerning music lover.
Apple iPod Nano is a mid-range model in the iPod family. It features a flash memory, a 2-inch diagonal display amd a click wheel which enhances user friendliness. It has gone three up gradations since its inception in the year 2005. It is also noteworthy that iPod Nano became the highest sold MP3 player in the history of sound engineering products.
The device can also be operated with Mac OS or Microsoft Windows. The device is highly convenient as a music player. Replacing batteries is costlier, and upgrading of memory facilities is almost impossible. But the value of iPod Nano as a MP3 player is simply not matched by any other device invented so far.
