It’s now winter and many areas of the country are falling victim to the winter’s frost and even snow in many areas of the country. At this time of year many of us will have a weather related accident, many occasions it isn’t even through lack of safe driving or observation it is simply a case of a small patch of ice which can leave us unstuck.

Most accidents will be caused when braking and whilst it is unavoidable when you are observant of your speed and when braking your car decides to continue on it’s journey it is important to note that your car should be in top condition before the frost sets in. If you don’t keep up a proper maintenance regime then you could end up missing a potential hazard in your car.

Further more if you have an accident at any time of year insurers have engineers and mechanics who can tell whether a car was in proper working order before many crashes. If it is found that you were driving an unsafe vehicle then your insurance would be rendered invalid. It’s not just a valid MOT certificate that will cut it in this case, as some vehicles may have had damage or deteriorated rapidly since their last mandatory check.

There are a number of easy things to spot that makes your car un-roadworthy such as if your wiper blades are shot or your reverse light bulbs have blown, but there are a number of subtle signs that can let you know there’s an underlying problem that could be voiding your insurance coverage.

You could have gone over a speed bump too quick and damaged suspension coils or a leaking steering rack could be making your car perilously unresponsive. A knocking noise when turning is often a telltale sign that your drive train is struggling. At any time of the year any one of these issues could become a serious problem but it is especially important to check your vehicle in winter as statistically there are more traffic accidents and collisions.

When you consider that if you are more likely to crash in winter and that these problems can void your car insurance or worse, cause an injury or fatality, it is definitely important you check your vehicle over before driving in the cold this year.

Many people have been unable to get cheap car insurance policies because of the increased accidents around this time of year and if drivers take more care and attention to their driving and their car’s health then the number of accidents would drop and mean for a much safer festive season.
