When my sister and I were kids, mother used to tell us stories at meal times, which we were very fond of.
As we grew, she smoothly moved on to reading stories out of storybooks and children’s magazines. We loved it so much that, as we became able to read independently, mother never had to tell us to read but give us things to read. We got very exited whenever we had a good book and used to wait eagerly for every weekly child’s magazine available then.
We always had enough things to read at our place. Most of the presents she gave us were books. She appreciated our interest in books among our relatives and family members and they also brought us books often.
Mother never made a fuss about what we read as long as they were age appropriate and did not set a bad example for us. So unlike some other kids, we could read things like comics too.
If you are a parent wanting your child to be a good reader, try doing what my mother did. Though simple as it is, you will see it works all write. You may also read the book, Reading bug and how to help your child to catch it, by famous Australian author, Paul Jennings, and find it indispensable.
