Let's face it, you don't necessarily have to be good at something to become famous or garner celebrity status.
There are many cases where people have been (to put it nicely) extraordinarily bad at something and gotten tremendous amounts of publicity.
This goes back to the public being intrigued by the unusual or different. And at times the somewhat sadistic nature of the viewing audience. Often used in sitcoms as the line "I know I shouldn't be watching but I just can't bring myself to look away".
How many people go to stock car races to see a crash? Who goes to a boxing match to see a knockout? And why do many of us laugh at the guests on Jerry Springer?
Stephen Bradbury was an Australian speed skater. He was good enough to make a Winter Olympics final. Although he was coming last. What made him famous/infamous was the fact that the leading competitor fell over taking everyone, except Stephen, down with him.
Stephen Bradbury won a gold medal, found fame and product endorsements for not being the best at what he does.
Still on sports we have Eddie "The Eagle" Edwards. Eddie became famous for being very bad at ski jumping. The worse he did, the more popular he became. The widespread attention that Edwards received in Calgary turned into a large embarrassment for the ski jumping establishment.
Eddie Edwards capitalized on his fame by releasing a book and a video called 'On the Piste'.
Another moment that will go down in 'infamy' will be the singing of the US national anthem by Roseanne Barr in San Diego in 1990. Apparently she is still dealing with the incident in therapy!
Think about yourself for a moment. Is there something you really enjoy doing, but know that you aren't very good at it? Cooking, singing, a sporting endeavor or maybe personal relationships?
Do your friends often get a tremendous laugh as you attempt your hobbies?
Now can you imagine parrying your lack of ability in front of a webcam or video camera?
How easy would that be? It is the stuff of 'viral videos"!
All you do is attach a link or 'hook' that would draw the viewer back to a destination of your choice and you have just monetized your lack of ability!
