When you're exercising using a treadmill, you are using up energy that needs to be replaced. This is ideal if you want to lose weight. But although you will be using up calories on your treadmill, it doesn't mean that you can just go out and eat whatever takes your fancy. You need to think carefully about what you eat.

In general terms, to get a balanced diet you need to eat foods from a wide range, and preferably include unprocessed foods and plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. If you do this, you will get all of the nutrients and vitamins that your body requires.

The main nutrients for human health are carbohydrates, fats and proteins.

Carbohydrates are mainly used for energy. Foods that contain carbohydrates include bread, fruit, cereals, potatoes and pasta. You may have heard that sports people like to eat foods such as pasta and bananas before a competition. This is because they release energy slowly. You should avoid packaged foods that have been loaded with sugar. This can lead to a 'sugar high' but then your blood sugar levels will plummet quickly.

Fats are found in oily fish, meat products and food that has been cooked in oil. Many people in industrialized countries eat too much fat. Many of us are not really aware of the fat that we eat because it is hidden in products such as cookies, cakes and processed foods. Eating a more natural diet will help you to reduce your fat intake. But do not go to the extreme that you do not eat any fat at all, because this is an essential nutrient. Nuts such as pumpkin seeds and almonds are a good source of fat. You could also try olive oil and avocados.

Proteins are essential building blocks required by the human body. They are needed to build and repair the body tissues and they can also be used for energy. Good sources of proteins include lean meat, fish, dairy products and eggs. Proteins can also be found in vegetable products such as beans, nuts and soya products.

By eating a variety of foods including all the above nutrients, you will be giving your body all the energy and goodness that it requires. This is especially important if you are exercising regularly on a treadmill or other exercise equipment.
