Knowing how to stop a panic attack is very useful to those of us who've been afflicted with this embarrassing and inconvenient malady. No one wants to admit this to friends and associates, and the intrusion a condition like this makes into our personal lives is huge, and extremely disconcerting.

If you're someone who's gone through these, you know the drill. You're out in some public place, perhaps standing in line at the store or the post office, and suddenly, for no apparent reason, you begin to feel uneasy. Your throat begins to tighten, your heart to race, and you seem to be short of breath. There's a tingling like pins and needles all along your arm and you're quickly overwhelmed with fear and self-consciousness as it is clear that another of those dreaded panic attacks is on the way.


You try to cope, by doing the things others have suggested, such as breathing exercises and muscle relaxation tricks, but it is soon very apparent that these don't work. Lacking a ready solution, you do what you normally resort to in a situation like this: you flee. You quickly and as discreetly as you can get the heck outa Dodge! What this does is simply transfer the location of your panic attack. Now you may simply be enduring it in your car! If you want to know how to stop a panic attack, you have to have a better understanding of that they are and how you can get an advantage over them.

You need to understand that a panic attack in and of itself is not life-threatening, and most of them pass within ten minutes or so. To learn how to stop a panic attack, first understand that you're not alone. In America more than 5% of the population has or is suffering from some sort of panic or anxiety disorder, and that it can become so debilitating for some of them that they eventually be unable to carry out life in a normal fashion, staying confined to a prison of their own making.


The key to learning how to stop a panic attack is to realize that they are not going to kill you, no matter what you feel like, and that by actually seeking to confront these attacks you will successfully rid yourself of them! Facing these attacks, and actually inviting them to come on in is the key to killing them off! Sounds strange, but it works!
