MY STIMULUS PACKAGE

My wife and I are embarking on a small-scale stimulus package that includes a renovation of the kitchen and both bathrooms in our Florida condo. The idea is to narrow the gap between the man-made beauty in our oceanfront apartment and the God-made beauty of the Atlantic that crashes directly outside. I say a small package only in comparison to President Obama’s package that has flirted with a trillion dollars. His is in the high ten-figure neighborhood; ours is in the high-five. I call our project a stimulus package because it keeps a construction crew busy, patronizes appliance stores, marble merchants, and so forth. Some people think I’m a little crazy to spend so much money in such an uncertain economy. I call it a stimulus package because it can help inspire people out of any fear-based thinking that might have influenced the way that they’re spending money these days.

Our new leader is doing much of what the great Franklin D. Roosevelt did to get us out of the Great Depression. (Notice how the word “depression” refers to an economic, as well as a psychological and emotional state.) The Government is acting from strength, borrowing hundreds of billions of dollars, to stimulate jobs, boost income for its citizens, and thus encourage us to buy things. It’s only our collective spending that will release us from this economic slowdown.
No less a light than William Shakespeare said, “Assume a virtue if you have it not.” No less a revolutionary spiritual and political leader than Mahatma Gandhi said, “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” In the New Age, you sometimes hear the expression, “Fake it ‘til you make it.” My wife and I are spending as if the economy is whole. I like to think that we’re doing our small part to stimulate it. If hat helps you to do your small part, all the better. And if your small part helps another to do his, then one by one, we’ll get out of fear and depression and into confidence and spending, and the abundance that we’re meant to live.
