An introduction to the Audi R8, a luxurious sports model from the Volkswagen Group that was released in 2006, with around 4300 built at the end of 2007.

The Audi R8 is one of Audi’s latest triumphs – a car that looks so good you wouldn’t be surprised to see any celebrity owning one. Initially introduced in 2006, the Audi R8 was an immediate success, gaining many fans right from the start. Only around 4300 have been produced, so getting your hands on one might be a bit tricky, however. Safety is a prominent feature in the Audi R8, with ABS, front dual-stage airbags, and also airbags on the sides of the cars.

The car weighs around 1600kg, quite a bit of this coming from the car’s permanent four-wheel drive, making it suitable for many situations. The car does however use Audi’s patented ‘Audi Space Frame’ – an aluminium frame used to keep weight down in their cars.

The transmission in the Audi R8 is usually a manual gearbox, but sometimes a single-clutch semi-automatic sequential manual transmission can take the place of this. The Lamborghini Gallardo has these same two choices. One of Audi’s direct shift gearboxes is not currently available in these cars, but Audi have plans to introduce them.

The top speed of the Audi R8 is over 300 km/h, with the car being able to go from 0 to 100 in around four seconds. This is the fastest acceleration speed out of all Audi models, and not many cars outside of the racing circuit can beat it in this field. In the lower class model (the 4.2 V8), over 400 horsepower is provided, whilst in the upper class model (the 5.2 FSI V10), over 500 horsepower is provided.

Production of the R8 is not easy by any means; seventy workers are required to construct the car, fitting and attaching over 5000 parts manually. Around fifteen of the cars are produced each day in the factory; Audi has chosen to keep them rarer to maintain their image as a purely premium car.

Several publications have put the Audi R8 on a pedestal as the only car ever able to truly beat the Porsche 997 model; the Audi R8 has been labelled a ‘super car’ by Evo Magazine, commenting on the R8’s “amazing stability, traction and grip, unparalleled steering accuracy and bite, [and] its uncannily flat and disturbance-free ride”.

The R8 truly is the future as far as classy cars are concerned.
