According to a recent survey the life expectancy and the quality of life after 50 varies greatly between countries in Europe. The results of the study showed that people in Estonia and Latvia had much fewer years of good health after 50 compared to the UK. Sweden came out top with the average life expectancy being 80.3 years and having 20.2 ‘good years’ of health after 50, this more than doubling that of Estonia who only average 9 years of good health.

The UK has the joint third highest life expectancy with France being second with an average of 75.6 years and England and Spain both having an average expectancy of 75.5 years. The UK also has the third highest average of good years after 50 with an expected 19.7 good healthy years after 50.

The research was collected by interviewing elderly people from each nation and finding out whether illness had limited to their lives in performing normal activities. The research found that although some countries had a higher life expectancy the number of healthy living years after 50 was dramatically lower. For example, Germany has an average life expectancy of 79 years but they years of good health after 50 is only 13.6.

As expected the newest entrants to the EU are amongst the lowest life expectancy as it appears that the elderly population are blighted by chronic illnesses in their old age. This is probably the result of poor standards of health care for a number of years during their ‘good’ age years.

The way in which these figures which were initially collected by Lancaster University, can help is that it shows that many countries may need to rethink their health care for people as they enter old age and also looking at treating illnesses early in young age to stop these becoming chronic problems in later life.
