There are many common diseases that show up symptoms such as, cough, fever, nasal blockage, trouble when breathing, thick nasal discharges, and at times they cause bad breath that soon disappears.

However, when such signs insist on staying, this might be a signal for a much severe condition that could only be understood by doctors.

One of my siblings have had the above symptoms for years and she reduced everything to allergy caused by contact with anything woolen or animal far that is too silky, until recently when she decided to see a doctor.

The descriptions of her illness to us seemed like a condition as serious as asthma but to the doctor, the signs matched those of a possible infection called sinusitis.

Sinusitis

According to my research, sinusitis refers to an irritation of the sinuses and the nasal openings.

The sinuses are defined as the hollow spaces in the skull where two are located within the cheekbones and the other two over the eyes.

They are coated with membranes that exude mucus consisting of antibodies that in turn protect the inhalation openings from the bacterial, viral, allergic and other environmental attacks.

For further understanding of the above, the best people to explain are your doctors, or you can gather more knowledge from the library or Internet.

When the sinuses become inflamed, this can result to strain in the eyes, nose, on the cheeks or one side of the head and also headaches.

This explains why my sibling always struggles with her sleep because she cannot breath easily; her nasal passage is ever blocked and wakes up with either or both of her eyes completely red and puffy.

Her doctors said that her sinusitis could have been caused by bacterial or viral infection and made worse each day by allergic responses to things such as fur and dust and he was right, because she love touching cats.

She was therefore advised to stay away from these pets except that she is addicted to them; she is not yet done with sneezing, runny and blocked nose until now.

Other causes I found out are the narrow exhaust openings that drain the mucus from the sinuses membranes to the nose, nasal obstruction caused by existence of tumors and/or nodules.

Short and long-term sinusitis

Many people suffer from sinusitis that lasts only for a short time and signs such as fever, headaches, blocked noses and discharge, hoarse voices, characterize it.

The headaches occur frequently for weeks when the sinusitis is long-term and also aching eyes and nasal congestion.

People should always take their symptoms to the doctor for he or she remains the only one who can tell the exact disease behind the appearance of such signs.

Diagnosis, treatment and prevention

The doctor will examine the patient’s mouth, throat and nose, to determine if the sinuses passages are blocked.

After that he will prescribe accordingly and as a patient, one would be required to follow the instructions closely.

My sister, has been using a herbal alternative and she seems to get better especially when the weather is good and away from cat’s fur and woolen garments.

To prevent sinusitis, it is important to ensure that you avoid exposure to air pollutants and things that cause allergic responses to you and if you have never suffered from it, stay away from a person who has it now.

Additionally, it is always important to check one’s diet, workout regularly, ensure proper room ventilation and use decongestants for nasal openings congestion.

Note: use this information to increase your health awareness, and for more clarifications, your doctor is still the right expert to visit.
