You need to look at a number of different factors when considering home contents insurance.
What no claims discount can you have? Some insurance company policies will extend to 25%, some will go to 40%! You need to have some history of course of not having made claims.
Also, you should take care of high risk items so that if you need to identify them, you can do so. These would be items of jewellery, things made from precious metals, coin, stamp or medal collections (or collections of anything else actually) and high-tech equipment such as telescopes, microscopes, camcorders and others.
You may also need to identify high risk items of high value - typically £1,500 but this amount varies - to the insurer so that it is clear that you own a particular item in case it is stolen or broken in some accidental way.
Of course, if you have to make a claim, then you will probably need to pay the excess. This means that if you have a policy excess of £150, and claim for £600, then you will receive £450 as the first £150 is taken from your claim as 'the excess'. You can get cheaper policies if you go for a higher excess amount, and vice-versa. Also, you get more cover with more expensive policy choices. One example of this is the
Tesco range -
Tesco run with Finest, Standard and Value policies. So, with the Finest policy, you get up to £35,000 of alternative accommodation cover, but with Value, just £15,000. With Finest, you get Home Emergency Cover but with Value, you don't. As with most things, you get what you pay for.
