Applying for Online Jobs

Applying for online jobs has become a much more frequent means of applying for employment in today´s job search. Many companies have discontinued their paper applications and will only accept applications online, and other companies use internet services to advertise jobs and require that applicants inquire for interest through those agencies.

The method of applying for jobs over the internet is not very different from applying for jobs in person, where a resume and cover letter is still preferred and many times, cover letters can be provided by sending an email with a resume attached. Individuals can apply for work that is exclusively online, and only need computer access and typically a word processing or spreadsheet program depending on the position.

Most employment that is exclusively online is on a per project basis, depending on the type of work offered. If an individual writes articles or is a specialist in internet marketing, web design or other web related work, they can make a part time or full time income by working strictly online. These jobs can be based upon a per project basis, or can have steady projects at various durations, paying very well.

If you are applying to an in person company by way of their online application, be sure to call or send an email to follow up on your application after 24 hours. Many times, hearing a person´s voice is enough to move an application to the top of the pile, so be sure to follow up on the applications you put in. Many applications are filled out only to be placed in a computer database, as many employers will not call you unless you are truly needed.

Do not stop at one or two applications when applying for jobs in the internet. Be sure to fill out as many applications for positions as possible with resumes and cover letters tailored specifically to that position. Many people make the mistake of sending general resumes and general cover letters to positions, assuming that company will not know the difference. The companies always know, and they judge applicants by their ability to genuinely want the job they are applying for.

Never call a company that does not list a telephone number to receive calls. If it is policy for that listing for you to only contact by email or fax, leave your follow up communications to those methods of contact. Following the rules is an important aspect of applying for any position, and you do not want to overstep your bounds. Usually companies set those standards because they do not have a system to handle incoming calls for employment.
