Postcards can be very effective marketing tools for your business. However, in order to utilize them properly, you do have to know a few of the basics about postcard design. Here is some of the information that you need to know.

What a Business Postcard is

Business postcards are designed to quickly interest the reader in the product or services that you are trying to sell. They come in three standard sizes - 4x6, 5x7 and 5.5x8.5 – and are printed on thicker cardstock. Because of their smaller size, they are less expensive for companies to mail out and more effective than other mail options because the customer can get the information that they need without opening an envelope.

How They can Help

There are numerous ways that postcards can provide useful information for you and your clients. They can be used as subscription forms for any magazines or newsletters that you publish. They can be used as easy order forms for your products. They can be used for feedback surveys after a service is given. They can also be used to send out coupons and to alert customers of new sales, specials, and products. They are often used by the customer because they are easier than order forms and coupons that they have to cut out of a page.

Design Tips

In order to ensure that your postcard will attract the attention of those that read it, you have to consider what your main goal of the postcard is. From there, you can work on a design that will meet those needs. Keep the text simple, particularly if your postcard is to be used as an order or survey form. Forms that are too complex will discourage readers. Make sure that your font is large enough to read. Sans-serif fonts work the best in smaller type sizes. Full color postcards will attract more attention than one or two colors. And coated card stock is not only more durable, but will also be more likely to attract attention.

Tips for Effectiveness

There are certain tricks that will make people want to use your postcard. Include postage on the card already so that they don’t have to look for a stamp. Make sure it is pre-addressed to return to you or includes a pre-addressed envelope. Leave plenty of room for customers to fill out the information. For surveys, check boxes are easy to fill out and more likely to be done than just questions. Offer incentives such as a coupon or giveaway for returning the postcard. And always tell the customer what to do – whether they are supposed to drop the card in the mail or bring it back to your store – even if it seems obvious.

The easiest and fastest way to create dramatic postcards is to go with a professional printing company. Not only will they have the tools to create professional results, but they will be able to handle the large volume of postcards that you will need for effective marketing. And more often than not, you will find it more cost effective to go with a printing company than to print postcards on your own.
