Camping Holidays: How to be smug.

There are a number of things you can do for amusement on camping holidays but one of the finest pleasures I know is watching novices erect complicated frame tents. It happens all the time and generally you don't need to wait around too long before you have the opportunity to enjoy this sport. It is easy to detect its approach which is signalled by the arrival of a smart four wheel drive vehicle with at least three kids in the back and completely laden down with brand new camping gear of all varieties. The kids are sent off to the playing area whilst Daddy puts up the tent. You just know this is going to be fun.

The first two bags contain the frame which is a puzzle of aluminium rods that clatter to the ground. All the ends are colour coded with stripes so that a socket marked red green and blue should be fitted to a rod with an identical code. You can see that there are about fifty of these pieces that must be assembled into a large three dimensional jigsaw puzzle. Daddy spends some time staring at the instructions before diving in. As frustration builds so does the noise as wrong pieces are plugged together, errors are detected, and pieces discarded into the pile with an ever increasing force.

After some time with very little progress Mummy decides that Daddy could do with some help. This is now really going to be fun. Of course you are not the only smug camper watching the show as this pastime is quite popular amongst seasoned campers and by now the audience will have grown quite considerably. Ultimately campers are a friendly group of people, and after an hour or so of enjoying the spectacle and before Mummy and Daddy decide to finally divorce, someone will offer assistance which will be accepted graciously then everybody will pile an and the tent will be up in a few minutes.
