Everyone has experienced it before; you call your phone company, cable company, insurance provider, employer, or bank and you get a person talking to you and walking you through telephone options to select or process your desired function. Whether you’re paying a bill, changing services, submitting a claim, or logging on to some type of account, automated phone capabilities are very useful in today’s times.

Most people do not realize it but, the automated phone capabilities are made available because of a special type of software. This software programs the phone system to speak a list of options offered to the caller. The caller then chooses the option that they desire and the automated phone capabilities incorporated in the software process a choice that the caller has made.

The automated phone capabilities can be handled through cell phones and landlines. The computer software in the background reads the spoken words of the callers. A processing system runs the recorded speech against records that it has and possibilities of what the caller has said. If the speech is hard to read, the systems gives the caller the best possible choice closest to what the computer assumes the person has said. Usually, if the system does not recognize the caller’s command, the call is routed to a customer care group of some kind where the caller can then speak to a live person. There is much testing, calibrating, and programming that goes into building these systems. It is typically quite expensive to install one of these systems but automated phone capabilities are well worth it.
