When you think of a family trip away, what comes to mind? A sunny, beautiful destination with plenty of fresh air, a crystal clear ocean and gorgeous beaches? A town steeped in history you can get lost in for days? Or perhaps a rocky mountain adventure taking you deep into forests and on a world of exploration?

What you probably don't think of, however, is how the sad truth of a family holiday can often mean poor accommodation and screaming kids because - let's face it - a change of air doesn't necessarily mean a change of attitude, and most parents know all too well how some children like to complain.

There are ways to combat this occurrence that can be the bane of all family holidays. For example, discussing with your children where they'd like to go instead of just deciding yourself. Perhaps your child has recently undertaken a geography or history project at school meaning there's a certain country they'd like to see for themselves, or a certain type of activity would be best undertaken in a specific location - for example, swimming with dolphins or riding atop a majestic camel. By taking into account the desires of your children, you not only make them feel valued in their opinions but, if you also like their idea, could save yourself some grief along the way as you're safe in the knowledge that the destination is definitely somewhere your child wants to go.

It's all well and good that the destination has been decided, but what about the accommodation? It's no secret that home is where the heart is - and your 'home away from home' while on holiday can have a massive effect on the mood of your family. That's why, in many cases, it's a safe bet to treat yourself to a luxury family hotel. In these magnificent establishments, all your family's needs are catered to and the sense of being a special guest at a beautiful hotel can really help boost morale and make your kids feel that extra bit cared-for.

What's more, the same goes for the adults too. Although these hotels can be more expensive than other types of accommodation, once you've tried it the chances are you'll find it difficult to go on holiday any other way. Luxury family hotels often come fully equipped with swimming pools, fitness areas and excellent children's facilities, including activity clubs, with fully-trained staff. It really can take the stress out of a family holiday - for everyone.

So next time you plan a family trip away, consider that a holiday isn't just something you ought to do on the cheap - it's meant to make you feel good, so reach out and grab that luxury hotel room for a truly lavish experience!
