It is a chain drive that represents a method of transferring rotary motion between two parallel shafts. These chain drives are positive, efficient and high torques can be transmitted. Also the chains that make up these drives are generally made from steel although in some instances plastic chains have also been developed. So what exactly are these chain drives?

The main type of chain drive is present in the form of a roller chain. The motion from a roller chain is transmitted using shaft mounted sprockets. These roller chains usually come in three main types, which are a simplex chain that consists of a length of single links. Another type is known as duplex, which is a length of double links and lastly there is triplex, which as the name suggests is a length of triple chains. Whatever type of roller chain you have you need to make sure that they are lubricated and regularly cleaned; however it has been discovered that this drive chain will work for long periods without the need for lubrication or maintenance.

There are of course more types of chain drives than simply just roller chains. Another example comes in the form of inverted tooth, which is also known as a silent chain drive. These have a higher power capacity, higher speed and a smoother operation. The way in which these work is motion is transferred via shaft mounted pinions, which are similar to those in gear wheels. It should be noted however that these chain drives do require lubrication such as an oil bath or spray.

One last type of chain drive that I am going to mention comes in the form of leaf chains. When it comes to lifting large of heavy loads it is this type of chain drive that most people turn to. The reason for this is the fact they don’t contain tooth sprockets or gear wheels so they are ideal to be used within fork lift trucks or machine tools.

A lot of people are often confused about which they should use out of chain drive or belt drive. The truth is both of these have their advantages and disadvantages. So why should you opt to use a chain drive? Well some of the main advantages to using a chain drive are as follows:

You don’t encounter any slippage between the chain and sprocket teeth and you won’t have to worry about the chain stretching as they are designed to be able to carry heavy loads. A chain drive also has a long operating life expectancy, which is thanks to the flexure and friction contact that occurs between hardened bearing surfaces, which are only separated by an oil film.

Another great advantage to the use of this piece of machinery is the fact it can operate in some of the most hostile of environments such as high temperatures, high moisture or oily areas as well as dusty, dirty and corrosive atmospheres, etc this is particularly important if high alloy metals or other special materials are used. And lastly a chain drive has a long shelf life. The reason for this is down to the fact metal chains don’t tend to deteriorate with age and they are unaffected by sunlight and different ranges of heat as well as oil.

The use of a good chain drive can not only help you get your job done in a fast and effective manner but it can also help to prolong the life of your machinery. In fact it is a great choice for a number of projects.
