Bonn, more than any other city in Germany, symbolizes all the advantages of German typical way of living. It’s beautiful, clean, quiet and has a lot of interesting places.
The city has long history – about 2000 years ago the Romans founded a legion Flavia Minerva on the area of the modern Northern Bonn.
In 1815 Bonn and its surrounding were handed to Prussia. XIX century was a very successful period in Bonn history - it was a time of art and culture raise.
When, after World War II Germany were divided into two parts, Berlin became the capital of GDR and Bonn became the capital city of BRD. After the reunion of Germany the capital status was returned to Berlin, but Bonn is still very important city for the German, although it’s far not the biggest one.
Bonn received the official status of German City of the United Nations and the unofficial nickname “Village-Capital”.
Bonn is a city with intense social and cultural life, attracting millions of tourists every year. One of the most famous people born in Bonn is Beethoven. Nowadays Bonn hosts Beethoven museum with the extended collection of objects and materials connected with Beethoven – his musical instruments, manuscripts, etc.
Another musician whose name is strongly connected with Bonn is Roman Schuman. He was not born in Bonn, but he spent his last two years and died here. Now two rooms of his house tell the sad story of his life. The rest of the house is occupied by the library.
The centre of Bonn is known for Museum Mile – a district where the most famous Bonn museums are concentrated.
Haus der Geschichte presents German contemporary history. It occupies 4000 sq m where photos, documents and objects sorted by themes are exhibited.
Bonn Art Museum (Kunstmuseum) is housed in the beautiful building created by Axel Schultez. The was opened in 1992 and this became a great event in the German cultural life. Totally white interior remind of the cabin of the spaceship. It can boast two great collections – “August Macke and Rein expressionists” and “Modern German Art”.
Alexander Koenig Museum is one of the best zoological museums of Germany opened again in 2003 after a complete reconstruction. Here also the ecological center «The Blue Planet - Living in a Network» is opened.
All in all Bonn has 40 museums, including even Women’s Museum.
Architecture of Bonn mostly presents baroque style and the most brilliant examples are University and City Hall.
Rheinaue park is called “Green heart of Bonn”. It was built between 1970 and 1978. With its breathtaking landscapes, picturesque flowers and trees the park often becomes an arena for interesting events and concerts.
