I've talked about single and double opt-in before and while many prefer the double opt-in strategy, I prefer the single.
Recently a student of mine was telling me they were having issues because after someone opted-in on their squeeze page they were sent to a sales page and if they closed the sales letter, they tended to miss the email confirmation. Originally they had their new subscriber taken to a thank you page that had a message to go to their email address to confirm the link.
So the question is do you send them to a sales letter, a thank you page, or forget about the double opt-in altogether?
For those of you using OneShoppingCart, they seem to require your new subscribers to confirm their subscription, so you pretty much have to follow their guidelines or go with another company.
I personally don’t use double opt-in. Autoresponse Plus, the company I use, does not require it. However, if you prefer to have your list confirm, the way that you might want to do it is have your thank you page say something like, “Thank you for signing up. There are two things you still need to do.” And then say, “1) Check your email because I sent you an email for you to confirm. 2) Here’s a pretty cool page that I wanted you to check out.” Of course, I’m just making this up, but you probably want to use that page to put a link to the actual sales letter. You could call it homework or you could call it something else, like, “Here’s some homework for you while you’re waiting on my next tips” or something. That could be a way to grab your readers attention and getting them to take action on your offer. That’s going to be probably your only way if you have to do double opt-in.
If you decided on the easier way of not doing double opt-in, then you don't have to worry about any of this. However, the key is to get started and just start building your list. You can always test and track to see what converts better for you. This is the best way to know if your business is structured for the most amount of profits possible.
