A keyword targeted ad refers to any kind of an advertisement that is linked to a specific word or phrase. Primarily it relates to an online advertisement on the Internet. The specialty of such an ad lies in its unique placement that is connected with its keyword. Basically, there are millions of people who search the Internet with the help of search engines such as Google, Yahoo, MSN and others. The user types any word or phrase in order to find websites or links that are most closely associated to that word or phrase known as the “keyword”.

Now the web pages or links that the search engine throws up for a particular user may carry small text ads or banners ads on top, bottom or sides of the page precisely related to that keyword only. The purpose is that the chances of such an ad being relevant to the user are very high. Thus, it is known as a keyword targeted ad.

Otherwise, normally if you may place your ad randomly over the Internet, chances are the ad will get lost among the millions of web pages, and will achieve very little relevant readership. Where as with a keyword based ad, they will get placed dynamically to the most relevant viewers who might be interested in that particular ad. Thus, the commercial Internet space is utilized in a most efficient manner and every advertiser gains the maximum in this way. This method creates a win-win situation for all – the advertiser, the reader, and the search engine or the host.

Some of the popular forms of keyword targeted ads include the “Pay Per Click” (PPC) and “Cost Per Action” (CPA). These are essentially refined variants of a keyword targeted ad, where the advertiser pays the host only for the exact number of times that his ad gets clicked or viewed by the visitors to the search engine.

Many businesses use Search Engine optimization (SEO) techniques in order to maximize the exposure of their business to the Internet visitors. Search engine optimization is primarily a way to compete against the algorithm of the search engines so that whenever an Internet user types a particular keyword, your desired article or link or website gets picked up by the search engine due to the matching keyword being used by you. This can provide maximum visibility to your website or link with minimum of effort.

Keyword targeted ads are sometimes also known as contextual ads because the aim of such advertising is relevant to a specific context. In the virtual world of Internet, such advertisements have become hugely popular due to the positive results they tend to deliver for the advertisers. Particularly with the growing popularity and usage of the Internet, the power of this form of advertising continues to grow without interruption.
