Japan has again opened its doors to the food market of US. The imports of beef from US have resumed again, ending a ban enforced by Japan due to health issues. Japan will accept only boneless beef of animals of age 20 months or younger. Japan inspected the 35 beef processing units of US and found 34 units fit to ship products to Japan.

Japan, like many other industrialized countries, had turned its back to conventional diet, supporting the processed food that has little flavor or health benefits.

Many of the wholesalers of food started as the wholesalers of processed food. To serve the customers with more efficiency, wholesalers are expanding their horizons through acquisitions, mergers and planned alliance to incorporate items other than usual ones, like frozen and chilled food and liquor.

As the distribution channels in Japan are being consolidated, most of the imported food products still have to pass the barriers of trading companies. Large and general trading units have subdivisions specializing in an array of food products while the smaller ones specialize in a definite number of items.

The trend has changed in the last decade as the companies look to cut costs. It is common for food processors now (especially for larger units) to possess the product directly from the trading company. In few cases, it can even import the products directly, if it is cost-efficient.
