Birds love to take a dip in the pool and bathe in the sun. Bathing and sunning is a ritual practiced by most birds to keep their feathers in pristine condition. This is important so they can escape quickly plus search for food. You can encourage birds to bathe in your backyard garden by providing fresh water in your favorite bird bath. With the heat of summer, bathing in water also helps the birds to keep cool.

Different kinds of birds have been observed bathing in different ways. Sparrows simply splash a little water around the edge of the pool or bath. Robins will get deeper into the water, flick their wings open & spread their tail feathers. It doesn't matter which kind of birds you have in your yard all of them are fun to watch!

Similar to bathing, each bird can have its own style of sunning. You will usually find jays in a flat-out sunbathing pose with outspread wings and tail to maximize the body area exposed to the sun. Other birds will stand with backs to the sun and feathers rustled up into a full sunbathing posture, or many birds will simply lie down on one side with ruffled plumage to expose their body area to the sun. It's interesting and fun to observe birds while sunbathing and take note of the different sunbathing styles. Sunning not only relaxes birds, but the ultra-violet rays in the sunlight converts chemicals in the bird's built in preening oil into Vitamin D.

Welcome beautiful birds to your backyard with attractive bird baths and bird feeders. Don't be surprised if you find them next to your bird bath stretched out, wings spread open, soaking up the afternoon sun!
