Tourism industry is an important contributor to the Indian economy as a source of foreign exchange earning. A number of sectors of the economy are closely related with the performance of this sector in terms of growth and employment. This sector contributes roughly around 6% and 9% to GDP and employment, respectively.

India's tourism industry is thriving on the influx of foreign tourists as well as more and more Indians willing to seeking travel packages to different destinations. A number of factors have contributed to revamping the image of the Indian tourism industry. Firstly, the rising Indian economy has led to higher middle class incomes. Consequently, people are more willing to spend on holidays and vacations home or abroad. The booming information technology industry has also made a lot of changes. Aggressive advertising campaigns by the government such as " Incredible India" has also altered India's image as a land of fascinating possibilities.
