Damascus, the capital city of Syria, holds the capital crown with good reason. Being one of the oldest cities in the world to have continually seen inhabitation, this incredible place has the honour of thousands of years of history behind it. So it's only natural that the Damascus culture is unrivalled in terms of tradition and its various quirks and delights have the extra boost of being based on ancient values that have remained within the Damascus population for millennia.

Damascus is built up from a plethora of historical sites that span the city's ancient periods, lasting through time to remind its inhabitants of the past that came before them. Often, these ancient sites and buildings are buried half underground - a result of centuries of changing times laying their foundations upon the old, though the ancient hasn't been forgotten amongst the new.

Surrounded by ramparts, the city is enclosed by a wall that cuts a striking view from the distance and opens its seven gates to allow travellers to and from its innards.

Cultural events are rife in Damascus, with festivals, musical events and parades taking place throughout the year to celebrate and learn about the city's drawn-out past. If you're really into finding out about Syria's capital's more ancient secrets, you can visit any of the astounding museum contained within the city walls.

The National Museum of Damascus is always a good port of call, with thousands of pieces ready to be seen. Azem Palace is another favourite and is the perfect choice for those wishing to learn about Damascus culture and arts in particular.

Those, however, looking to see Damascus in a more modern light will still find plenty of sights and sounds to please. The city's café culture is strong, with countless cafés and small eateries adorning the streets. You will often see these cafés packed during the day as they are very popular places for locals to meet their friends, have a few drinks and partake in a water pipe. These cafés are also excellent places to meet new people as board games like backgammon and chess, as well as card games, are very commonly played in the relaxed atmosphere.

There's so much to see, do and learn about culture in Damascus, you'll be glad you booked those flights to Damascus - so relax and enjoy this vibrant city - it will be a trip you won't forget.
