Bisphenol A – Facts
BPA was suspected to be harmful for humans in the year 1930, its adverse effects on hormones was reported in 1936. Since then, there have been on-going surveys and last year, the Food and Drug Administration reported the harmful effects of BPA. Also, over the past few years there has been a significant amount of media reports all over the world focusing on BPA found in baby bottles and other polycarbonate feeding equipment. Concerns about the use of BPA in consumer products grabbed headlines in 2008, when several governments issued reports questioning its safety, even infants were at risk from exposure to the chemical. Today 95% of baby bottles are produced from polycarbonate. Polycarbonate is used in thousands of consumer products worldwide and has been the most widely used raw material in baby bottles which is hazardous for children health. In April, Canada became the first nation in the world to label BPA potentially hazardous. In October, the country announced its move to draft regulations that ban baby bottles containing the chemical.
