The Lego Mindstorms Nxt Robots Story
It all started with father and son let us have some fun, competition!
My 10 year old son had seen an advert on TV and surely wanted the Lego mindstorms nxt 8527 tool kit as his birthday present. His reason, well, he could beat Daddy again when they timed themselves to assemble the robots in the shortest time and what’s more who could get the robots to do clever things with the tools they had available in the tool kit.
My husband is an IT guru, clever and good at what he does in his job working with computers all the time. Obviously, this was just a piece of cake for him. I’ll take you up as he always does and loosing 75% of the time. Today’s child is much much clever than you think.
We all waited patiently for my son’s birthday two months later. Right, the kit is here, are we all ready, set to go? Yeah, yeah, said my hubby in the loudest voice ever – bless him! In an‘egoistic’ kind of way, he opened the pack, got the bits out, ready to have a go. My son suddenly appeared with his father’s hat on, trousers that looked so baggy on him. It is hilarious, if you can imagine a tiny 10 year old in the trousers of a man 6ft 3ins, you’ll be rolling on the floor with laughter. As soon as my hubby saw him, he said ok son you have your turn first. And as you may well guess, my son took the kit confidently from him.
Within 20 minutes, he had the ‘humanoid’ robot ready. It was, walking, talking, could see, touch and hear! Dad looked on amazingly with his chin in his hand and turning to me to in a quiet voice, said, “Darling, do you think you could get me a drink, please?” I chuckled and left to get the drink. When I came back, he told me had given up. “Why”, I asked? There was no reply. My son then jumped up, “O sorry Dad, you could have your hat and trousers back…”
