Monitoring the temperature of your baby during illness is critical. Firstly it enables you to track the progress of the illness. However, more importantly in enables you to watch out for significant increases in temperature which (although rare) can lead to potentially serious consequences including fitting, coma and death. Having a reliable thermometer in the medicines cabinet is therefore very important.
The rectal route was previously favored for babies. However, this causes discomfort and many babies strongly dislike it. In addition the thermometers used take a couple of minutes to produce a stable and reliable reading as the bulb has to warm up to body temperature via conduction.
The ear canal on the other hand overcomes these disadvantages. Discomfort is not an issue with the baby ear thermometer and many babies will even sleep through the whole process. The reading is obtained very quickly via measurement of infra red radiation emitted within the ear (seconds as opposed to minutes). The devices are also very easy to use typically involving just inserting the sensor and pushing a button.
Although these devices are focussed at babies they can in fact be used by the whole family (including adults). Babies are ill very frequently in their early years and a baby ear thermometer is therefore a very valuable investment for all new mothers.
