In the middle of the Mojave Desert in Nevada with no real water source, it’s hot and miles from anywhere – this seems like a strange site for a city. But astonishingly this hasn’t stopped Las Vegas from becoming America’s biggest playground and the world’s largest gambling city.
Las Vegas very reason for existence is to entertain. It is a fantasy world where during a 15 minute stroll you can see the Eiffel Tower, the Egyptian Pyramids and the Empire State. Although, Las Vegas is a contrived city where nothing is really real, this doesn’t matter because you come to here for one reason – to have fun.
The city itself is the biggest attraction. There is something to see everywhere you look and the giant neon signs mean this city really comes to life at night. This leaves your days free to lounge by the pools in some of the biggest hotels in the world.
To do this city justice you have to go into a casino, even if you’re not a gambler yourself. It was built on gambling, so to deny this side of it would be to ignore its history. Las Vegas Boulevard, or ‘The Strip’, is where you will find the biggest and brashest casinos including the Venetian, the Bellagio, the Mirage and the Luxor. These mega casinos have thousands of rooms, massive gambling floors and never-ending entertainment.
Cruise along a canal on a gondola through the Venetian and visit a replica of St Mark’s Square; in the Bellagio you can see water ‘dance’ to music; the Mirage is where you can admire the beauty of Siegfried and Roy’s rare white tigers; and for some of the city’s best performances from international artists, dancers and entertainers head to the giant black pyramid that is the Luxor.
Seeing as gambling is the raison d’être for Las Vegas, you simply must visit the area where it all started back in the 1930s. Iconic neon signs that have been photographed a billion times as well as the city’s oldest casinos such as the Golden Nugget are all found around Fairmont Street.
If you do just one show in Las Vegas, make sure it’s the Cirque du Soleil. Many of the biggest hotels host their own versions of this exciting mix of circus art and street entertainment and it is well worth the money.
For thrill seeks, riding the Manhattan Express roller coaster at the New York New York Hotel and the High Roller at the Stratosphere Hotel are a must. The High Roller actually circles the outside of the building over 100 stories up. Just don’t expect to have time to admire the view.
