It’s no surprise why Miami is America’s favourite holiday destination. Sun, sand, sea, parties, style and beautiful people are the ingredients that are used to make this city. Developed as a winter beach paradise for the rich and famous in the 1920s, Miami is now a vibrant, year round destination and the gateway to Latin America.
Although there is more to Miami than just beaches, this is still the major pull-factor for most people when booking a holiday here. The area has over 20 miles of beach and the sea is warm and fairly sheltered. Miami seems to have more than its fair share of good-looking people with bronzed, toned bodies who parade the promenades along the cities beaches and when you’re in this area you will notice that it’s more about being seen than actually swimming.
Ocean Drive is where you will find the most popular beach; South Beach. This is exactly what you’d expect from a Miami beach; jogging paths, beach volley ball and crystal-blue waters. However, this perfect combination does mean it gets rather busy, so avoid it during peak-season.
In the same location you will also find Miami’s world famous examples of Art Deco architecture. Built in the 1920s and ‘30s, the pastel coloured hotels that line South Beach and Collins Avenue have been well-preserved as integral parts of Miami’s history.
Organised tours of the area run from the Art Deco Welcome Centre on Ocean Drive, but a walk around will give you a good insight into the style and culture that this architecture is famous for.
Thanks to its proximity to Central America and the Caribbean, Miami has a thriving Latin American community. Just west of downtown you will come across Little Havana. This small but influential area is predominantly Spanish-speaking and is a small slice of Cuba in the heart of Miami. You really feel as though you have exchanged North America for Central America.
Coconut Grove is one of the oldest areas of the city established in 1825, but has now become populat with the young and trendy ‘in-crowd’ as an artistic area. Every year it hosts the Coconut Grove Arts Festival which is one of the biggest contemporary arts festivals in America. You’ll also find the Coconut Grove Playhouse here which has been putting on productions since the mid-1950s.
During the day this area has a Bohemian village feel, but at night, it turns into one of Miami’s premier clubbing spots and the area attracts a more sultry and sexy crowd than that of South Beach, although both areas attract world famous DJs and beautiful people.
Each March, Miami hosts the Winter Music Conference attracting DJs and dance industry big-wigs from over 70 different countries. This confirms Miami’s status as a party city.
