We talked last time about the two forms of Internet selling. We review the first one that centers on the technology with little or no human contact. This time I would like to look at the second form of Internet Marketing that does include the possibility of significant human interaction between the seller and the buyer.

Most of the elements in the technological form of sales will remain the same this model. You will still spend time in front of your computer and you will still learn how to collect data to put into an auto-responder. You will still have the team to work with you. You will still offer people information and an opportunity to purchase your products on a prearranged schedule. The difference is that you will include contact information in you sales material and you will be available to talk to people at pre-arranged times. You will use emails, live chat programs and the telephone to respond to their questions and objection about the information you prepared and presented on the internet. There will be some people for whom you product will not be a good fit. You will tell them you can not sell your product to them because it is not what they need. Some people will have doubts and questions. You will treat each of these as if it were an objection to the sale and answer that specific objection and then ask them if there is anything else. The process of building a relationship occurs as you reveal the truthfulness of your approach and your willingness to take the time to answer their questions.

Your location, appearance, your clothing and your home still will not matter, but your speech patterns and your ability to speak other languages may affect your ability to do business in this format.

The end result of this kind of selling is a much smaller, less impressive list of people to market your product to, however; these people know you by name and have a relationship with you because you have taken the time to build that relationship at their convenience. The relationship is the most important thing and the lists are a distant second priority. Smaller list built on relationship may only have 500 people but it will frequently out perform list of 15,000 who have simply opted in to receive an email from you.

The emerging trends seem to indicate that both forms of marketing will be viable for a time but the relationship based form seems to have a growing number of followers and seems to be gaining momentum while the technological from seem to be declining in popularity. The spam filters are getting more sophisticated that they are now commutating with each other. When they see you send out a large number of emails they black list your URL and can even fine you regardless of the opt-in status of your subscribers. It this climate, segmenting lists and operating with smaller list may be the way of future marketing. All lists have a limited life span, normally about 1 year. To compensate for this natural attrition it is necessary to continually promote your list no matter which form of marketing you choose to use.

Till next time,

Bob
