A couple, are to take legal action against their tour operator after a Caribbean holiday to celebrate their first wedding anniversary earlier this year was ruined when they fell ill at a hotel with a history of previous outbreaks among guests.

A couple who went on a holiday to celebrate their first wedding anniversary, are going to sue their tour operator, after they became ill while away on the trip. The hotel that they stayed in had a history of past outbreaks among the guests. The couple believe that their trip was 'ruined' and so are taking legal action to receive a compensation claim.

The man aged 43-years and his 40-year-old wife both from Thornton-Cleveleys in Lancashire, fell ill just days into their Dominican Republic getaway. Mr Wilkinson ending up so poorly, that a doctor had to be called out to give him an antibiotic injection.

The couple, who are still suffering from the after effects several months after they few home, have now instructed injury lawyers at a leading national legal firm after their disastrous stay at the Fun Royale Hotel.

Other guests fell ill

The man and his wife, who travelled with First Choice, claim they were among a number of guests at the all-inclusive site and its sister hotel the Fun Tropical in Puerto Plata who all fell ill. Their symptoms included stomach cramps, sickness and diarrhoea. Some guests even reported that they saw mice in the restaurants.

The man said: "We became concerned when a number of people were taken ill at the hotel. People were being sick in the pool and nothing was done to clean it up. It was just disgusting."

"When we tried to speak to the First Choice representatives about our concerns, they didn't want to know and when we asked if we could fly home early, we were told that there were no seats available. I was very disappointed by the way I was spoken to and how we were treated."

Mouse sited

His wife added that she was appalled by the hygiene standards at the hotel, saying: "At one point I was eating in the dining room when I saw a mouse run across the floor.

"I complained to a member of staff but my concerns were totally ignored. It was just as if they were used to receiving complaints everyday about vermin in their restaurant!"

Claire Comiskey, from the legal firm's International Travel Litigation Team, which is representing the couple, said: "It's simply not good enough that the couple's wedding anniversary was ruined by illness.

"People save hard for their holidays and look forward to them for a long time, especially in the current climate, and that's even more true when people are celebrating something like an anniversary."

She also added: "First Choice was responsible for ensuring that the Fun Royale was safe and suitable for holidaymakers to stay there. They let the couple down and clearly, they now need to look again and ensure future guests can enjoy their holiday there without being poorly."

She concluded: "Failures at the hotel ruined the couple's holiday and their anniversary and, as a result, we are now pursuing legal action against First Choice."
