There are many laws that are enforced to stop discrimination and unfair treatment of workers in their workplace. Los Angeles is a big region where many companies and businesses are established. Because of this, workplace discrimination cases can be rampant in Los Angeles.

And certainly, there are Los Angeles Employment Discrimination Attorneys who can help workers in their battle against offenders in their workplace.

Discrimination in Workplace

There is no justification for discrimination and despite the fact that there are many people who are against it, it is still a practice for some. There are employers, co-employees, and other parties in a workplace that discriminate employees. They discriminate based on the following attributes:

• Race. Racial discrimination is probably the most common basis of discrimination complaints filed by workers in Los Angeles. Many of the migrants in the region are treated as though they are inferior compared to other workers just because of their nationality.

• Age. There are cases wherein younger employees are not treated professionally solely because of their age. Some of them are rejected from promotions even if they are qualified. Older employees are also sometimes considered as incapable or incompetent just because of their more advanced age.

• Gender / Sexual Preference. Some perceive members of the opposite sex as inferior or somewhat incapable of handling heavier duties and responsibilities because of their gender or sexual preference.

• Religion. One’s beliefs should never be considered as the basis for his knowledge and capabilities. Workers with other religion should be given the chance to prove themselves in their workplace.

• Disability. A disabled worker would need assistance from the company so that he can earn and provide for his needs. Ramps and railings must be placed strategically so that they have easier access to their place of work.

• Pregnancy. Maternity leaves should not only apply to married women but to everyone who is pregnant. Pregnant workers and their capabilities should not be underestimated just because of their condition.

What Workers Can Do

Employees who are subjected to discrimination in their workplace are often treated as inferior. There are also those who do not receive their rightful compensation, get rejected for promotions, and even terminated. But they have rights and they may opt to do the following:

• Report the Incident. It would be best for the worker to first report the incident to the concerned department in his workplace. If no actions have been made, then, it would be wise to contact government agencies so they can do the necessary actions.

• Gather Evidence. Documents like contracts, pay slips, and others can prove the discrimination in the workplace. Discrimination victims must have these documents as it can support their claims of being treated unfairly.

• Look for Witnesses. It would help if the victim can find other parties in the workplace that have witnessed or is experiencing the same discrimination from the offender.

• Hire a Lawyer. Hiring Los Angeles Employment Discrimination Attorneys is a wise move for victims of discrimination. These lawyers know the proper legal actions they can take against abusive parties.
