Clinical depression is a medical illness that negatively affects the way you feel, think and act. You are unable to function normally and you will lose interest in the things that you used to enjoy. This illness will make you will feel sad and hopeless for long periods of time. This condition is not the same as feeling sad and depressed for a few days then feeling better afterwards. It can affect your body, moods, thoughts as well as behavior. It will affect your ability to work or study. It can also affect your eating habits as well as the way you interact with other people. When you are suffering from this condition, you will not feel like you are yourself anymore.

Clinical depression comes in three prevalent forms. Major depressions interferes with your ability to work, study, sleep and enjoy pleasurable activities. These episodes can occur several times in your life. Dysthymia is a less intense form of the condition and it involves long-term chronic symptoms that are less severe.


Bipolar disorder also referred to as manic-depressive illness is when periods of depression alternate with periods of elation and increased activity. This is referred to as mania. The number, severity and the duration of the symptoms of any of the above forms of the disease may vary from individual to individual.

This type of depression is different from normal stress and sadness in the sense that it involves a noticeable change in normal functioning. It can persist for about two weeks or even more. This illness can start suddenly and built up over a period of weeks, months or even years. Clinical depression affects all kinds of people regardless of the age, race or even gender.
