Even it has not struck you but the cork flooring has been fast becoming the first choice of flooring when the big and important buildings are concerned. Whether it is church or museum, school or hospital they all like to have the brilliant noise buffering quality as well as the unmatched comfort of the cork floors. If your feet are tired after long travel then the cork flooring will provide relief. This quality is present in rare flooring types.

But what exactly the cork floor is? Cork is synonymous with the bottles. Here cork is made from the outermost bark of the cork oak tree that is mostly produced in the Mediterranean area. Portugal supplies nearly 50% of the world’s total production of the cork. Then other countries that produce cork are Algeria, France, Italy, Spain and Morocco.

For these countries cork trees are a very important source of income. It gets them big amount of earnings from the foreign lands. The cork bark tree’s bark is harvested after nearly 10 years. These barks are then thoroughly cleaned and boiled. Then the rough side of the bark is cleaned away.

The finest parts that are left are then selected and used to make the cork. Then the leftovers called as scrap are composed and put in to the grinder that converts them into small parts or granules. Then these granules are mixed with a material that will bind them together. Now the whole mixture is converted into big blocks of flooring material that is called cork flooring.

Apart from its ability to absorb the sound up to greater levels, cork floors are durable and provide insulation from the heat and moisture. In addition, the production of cork does not affect the ecological balance as the barks are cut or harvested in such a way that it should not affect the tree. Laws are in place so that the leftover material from cork production is not wasted and cork trees are protected.
