The importance of branding cannot be underestimated. Indeed, without an effective brand strategy, your company will struggle to survive in what is a competitive and often challenging business marketplace. Not only that, but without a strong corporate identity, it is extremely hard to build customer relationships and brand loyalty.

Ideally, your brand should communicate everything about your company – whether it be a one man operation or a large multi-national organisation – from its philosophy and target audience, to what products and/or services it is offering. And a successful brand should be able to do this instantly.

The rise in numbers of both consumers and businesses taking to the internet has meant that companies now have to think far more creatively about how to brand themselves. This is primarily due to the fact there is an increased level of competition for business, geographical borders have been removed and the potential for marketing has exploded.

The biggest change to have occurred is that of social marketing through the creation of Web 2.0 applications. This basically refers to the internet forums, social networking sites and online marketplaces that have sprung over the past few years. As a result, power is increasingly in the hands of consumers: this ultimately means that businesses now have to be far more innovative in their approach to building brand relationships.

Therefore, if you want to effectively market your company online, you must understand how to utilise these tools to your advantage. For example, allowing customers to feedback about your products or services will serve to enhance not only your relationship with them, but also the probability of gaining new business. Interacting on other blogs and online forums is also a good way to build credibility and get yourself known.

Of course, your website, including its layout and design, is of utmost importance. In fact, without a consistent and effective brand message here, you will not only confuse your customers, but also weaken the overall profile of your company. In this respect, everything from the colours and typeface you use, to the logos and language will affect how your brand is perceived.

Having an appropriate domain name is also key. A way of allowing you to create an identity on the web, it is an intrinsic part of your brand strategy. In addition to forming the base of any email addresses you have, it also serves to keep your brand consistent and as such, should reflect your company name. Consequently, as soon as you have formulated your business idea, you should start looking for appropriate domain names and secure them quickly.

Branding is essential to the survival of your business. It should be simple, memorable and consistent. And, in creating an effective brand, you will be able to maintain a unique edge, as well as compete in the cut-throat business world.
