The secret to making money in the Inscription profession is Milling. Like a Jewelcrafter's Prospecting skill, Milling lets a Scribe extract Pigments from stacks of herbs. Using these Pigments, you can create the Inks that are essential to anyone in the Inscription profession.
Now the idea behind this isn't to get a cheap source of raw materials for creating your own Glyphs. You'll of course need to check prices at the Auction House to be sure, but in most cases you'll get a lot more gold if you sell Inks and Pigments at auction, rather than creating Glyphs and trying to sell those. It may sound crazy that the raw materials are worth more than the finished product, but that's what the market dictates these days.
To really succeed at this, you'll want to know the current price for the Pigments you have, and for the Inks that those Pigments produce. The market in these products can be fickle, and sometimes it will make more sense to sell the Pigments instead of the Inks, while other times the reverse will hold true. Still, with just a little effort and the right knowledge, you can make a decent living through Inscription.
