The historic Indo-US civil nuclear deal (N-deal) sealed last year marked the end of India's nuclear isolation. It also held the promise of vast opportunities for several small and mid-sized businesses engaged in the Indian nuclear equipment manufacturing sector. As India opened its doors to nuclear trade, innumerable avenues and wide power-generation opportunities sprang up for the SME segment in the country.
However, very few small businesses in the manufacturing sector have the capacity and the requisite knowledge to venture into the nuclear equipment space. Most small companies are unaware of the potential of this sector. The benefits of this sector are yet to be leveraged by Indian SMEs in the manufacturing sector.
Untapped zone
Presently, a small percentage of heavy machinery and equipment manufacturers in India are engaged in manufacturing nuclear equipment like condensers, pressure vessels, reaction vessels, heat exchangers, tanks, coolers and air receivers. However, the immense growth potential of India’s nuclear equipment manufacturing sector still remains untapped by majority of the small and mid-sized businesses.
“Participation by the mid-sized equipment manufacturers of the country in the nuclear sector has been quite limited. To emerge as major beneficiaries of the N-deal, small players have to harness the potential and upgrade their manufacturing facilities for undertaking the production of equipment extensively used in nuclear power generation plants and nuclear reactors,” said D Dasgupta, financial analyst at CMC in Kolkata.
Though, several large power-generation equipment companies in India have begun strategising to grab a large share of the nuclear equipment market, small manufacturing firms are still lagging behind. SMEs have to maintain high quality standards and an operational safety culture for grabbing nuclear equipment manufacturing projects.
“Small companies have to adopt high standards of work efficiency and acquire specialised knowledge and technical know-how to produce high-quality nuclear equipment and meet global manufacturing norms,” said V Krishnavelu, MD of United Cooling Systems, a mid-sized cooling tower manufacturer in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.
SME manufacturing companies can also team up with the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) to learn about the safety precautions and techniques required to produce nuclear equipment and step up its supplies to global nuclear plant makers
