Facing up to financial issues immediately will be key in getting through. There is an array of information available these days that offer help to struggling households.

Financial matters are clearly out of hand for many in the UK. Those seeking debt management advice are up by a third over last years' numbers just at the Citizens Advice bureaux alone. Many for hire debt management companies are seeing even higher increases.

The first advice is to stay current with priority debts such as housing, which would include your heating and council tax. The next step is of course, seek advice from professionals. There are different options here such as Consumer Credit Counselling Service, National Debtline or private debt counselling services. Some are charity and others are fee based. However, even the for fee companies usually allow the initial enquiry at no cost and often offer online query sheets.

Regardless of the service you select, you will need to have all your numbers in order before your meeting. Collect all your debts together with your assets and your income. Have a clear telling of your situation in mind to share with your counsellor. The more information you give them, the more accurate advice they can offer.

You needn't feel embarrassed to meet with a counsellor. These are professionals who will keep your confidentiality and who have heard every story before. No matter how terrible you think your situation or how sorted your case, they have no doubt dealt with something similar. The important thing here is that you lay out your information clearly so that they can help you to manage your debt and get you feeling better about the matter.
