As recently as five years ago building an effective commercial website was something done only by professionals or very keen enthusiasts. Many could build websites that looked pleasing enough to the eye and produced very little errors, but the real secret lay in making sure that the site was search-engine friendly and that once launched it could be easily changed and maintained.
Static websites which most commonly are built in HTML and CSS are easy to build. There are many templates available for these sites and web page editor packages support their construction on a number of hosting options. But, they are limited in their uses and far more useful websites are built in a dynamic format. On a dynamic website information is pulled in from other sources, such as from a database using scripting and pages are built in situ as they are requested, making it more efficient and easier to update.
Using the static format is most appropriate for small catalogue-style websites, where it basically acts as a shop window for the enterprise. But, for any website that needs regular updates and other functionality such as e-commerce the dynamic format is the only real solution.
So, before even starting to build a website think long and hard about its purpose and how it is likely to develop. You then have a choice of building it yourself or employing a professional to do it for you. Many companies that offer various
web hosting packages also supply a number of website templates and other functionality such as e-commerce shopping carts and advice on how to optimise the site for search engine spiders.
For that is the real challenge when building a website. It is easy enough to build and launch a website with all the tools available on the web but once launched a website will only be successful if it can be found via search engines such as Google. So, any web host companies that offer search engine optimisation tools should be the starting point. In addition, make sure that the host company is reputable and that they are online 24/7, offering telephone support at all times, preferably based in the UK. Also, if the intention is to develop the website further by adding pages and functionality ensure that there is enough web space available from your host for your site. Try to find hosts that offer unlimited web space as part of the package and you can’t go wrong.
