Legislative laws are set up to protect women against domestic violence. The initiative has to be present in the person subjected to domestic violence and the laws offer enough protection to the victim. Domestic violence is often hidden and people feel it would result in a stigma if it is brought out in public. Hence many women and children suffer in silence and this result in lot of psychological impact.

Dowry seems to be the primary aspect of domestic violence. This is an age old tradition which is punishable by law yet many homes continue extorting money by torturing their daughter-in-laws. Bearing the violence silently results in encouraging such situations and hence one must be able to express the situation through a legal window.

Rural women are unaware of the laws passed under Domestic Violence Act. It has clear stipulations for violence committed against women for dowry, an act by force and physical harm. There are special mentions regarding physical assault by hitting, beating and also forceful conduct. Cruelty of any form is not tolerated including trying to verbally implicate the women about her character.

Live-in couples also are protected under the domestic violence act and any kind of physical or mental abuse is not pardoned by law. But despite education or awareness Indian women are not able to book the person who commits violence. In case there are children at home, they are unable to comprehend the behavior and go through confusion all through their growing years. This affects their studies and blurs any kind of rational social interaction.

Women or children who are exposed to this kind of act must try to contact NGO’s who also conduct counseling and offer advice to the household. Women can also avail of relief as per the Indian penal code. Access to shelter houses and medical units is also allowed. Dignity is more than enough to re-establish ourselves and equipping women with education is very important. Emotional integrity and shunning the masochist attitude will help her regain her self esteem.
