If you are in the beginning stages of learning how to earn money by working at home using the Internet, you may have become overwhelmed at times. Especially when it comes to the words, terminology and jargon that are thrown around. It's as though they expect you to know this stuff - when you haven't a clue!
One term that is repeated constantly is keyword, and sometimes the plural, keywords. You will also hear (and see) terms like, keyword rich, long-tail keywords, and relevant keywords.
You may have even heard some gurus say that once you have the concept of keywords firmly entrenched in your marketing savvy, you are well on your way to success as an online marketer. Whether that's true or not, it will be important that you have at least a basic understanding of the term.
First you have to back up a step. Think of where most of your web traffic will come from. Search engines, right? What do people do when they are looking for something on the Net? They enter a phrase or a set of words in order to find what they are looking for. Just stop and envision how you made your last online search.
Most people who surf online have little comprehension that a business person behind the scenes has paid for certain phrases or keywords. They just enter and search. We've all done it.
Now, not all of these keywords are purchased or paid for. Some online marketers see to it that their keyword phrase is imbedded in their articles, landing pages, blogs, signature lines, and on and on.
So essentially, the term keyword refers to a word or phrase used to focus an online search and to target advertising. It's a word or phrase that a user feels is relevant to the subject he or she is seeking. That user will then enter the selected keywords into an online search form. Search engines take it from there, examining the records in its database to locate documents that match the keywords. Isn't the Internet fascinating?
Your job then is to develop a set of keywords that 1. fit the business category you have chosen, and 2. are not being used by four or five million other marketers out there.
Keep in mind that if a keyword doesn't appear anywhere in the text of your web page, it's highly unlikely your page will appear in the search results.
In Understanding How Keywords Help You Profit Online - Part II we will look at how keywords relate to earning money on the Internet.
